gloomhaven, not foresthaven

Our Gloomhaven campaign is progressing well. Some of us are even approaching retirement. It works like this: Every character has a personal quest (randomly assigned at the start), and upon completion of the quest, the character retires and you get to roll a new character. New classes are unlocked based on the quests completed, and you get additional perks based on (I think) the prosperity level of the city. So it’s basically an ascension mechanic.

HGR’s personal quest required him to beat three crypt maps, so we pushed crypts for a few sessions (and HGR skipped one of his map objectives because he’d have no need of perks in his sweet retirement villa). After we finished the third crypt, HGR re-read his quest card and realized he wasn’t ready to retire yet—doing the crypts unlocked a quest chain that he had to complete. Oops!

We put that on hold in favor of numbers’ personal quest, which requires him to enhance four cards. We figured unlocking item enhancement would help the whole team’s progression. So we did the enhancement unlock quest, and we discovered that enhancements are great, but also very expensive. “I’m not going to be able to retire for five million years!!” numbers said. “Just like in real life!!”

Anyway, I think the plan is to do HGR’s unique quest chain next. Dante is also close to retirement; his goal is to kill 30 elites, which he has pursued with great gusto. (Last session, my map objective was to kill just one elite and I couldn’t do it because Dante kept killing them all.) They might end up retiring together. newbie and I are nowhere close. newbie’s quest requires him to kill bandits; we saw a few at the start but haven’t seen any since. My quest requires me to kill forest imps and we have not seen a single forest imp. “It’s called Gloomhaven, not Foresthaven,” said HGR.
