Venting and Decompressing after a LONG Day...

So we have a quiz bowl tournament on the 25th that is about 20 minutes from the High School. I hope that we actually do well in this one since most of our kids seem to feel deflated after we haven't made it past the 2nd game in knockout rounds at ANY of our tournaments so far. I'd love for them to place just this once before we have our regional tournament in March. Since Jr. High Quiz Bowl has their state tournament the same day as we have this one, they are getting the van and we are getting a bus.

I don't mind a bus since this means I don't have to drive and I can just focus on the kids and breathing on the way there and back. I've talked to one of our two team moms that I work with about picking up lunch for us since she will have her vehicle with her and it isn't easy to move the bus once we get where we are going. I need to tell the kids so we can figure out in advance where we want food from and what we want, so we can take an order and just send her with my school card. My principal said that even though we are within the driving range where they don't typically approve food money, we will get it approved since we are there from 8am to 5:30pm. Thank goodness! I'll still have the kids bring extra cash in case they want or need snacks as we go.

At this rate, I have this tournament then regionals and then we are done for the year. I'm hoping Will qualifies or the State All Tournament Team, but we shall see. Even if we do not qualify for state, that's still possible since it is based on the average points per game earned by a single student during the regional and state tournaments.

It's been a rough and wild ride, but I'm almost done with my first year as the Quiz Bowl Coach. It's not been bad and I've really enjoyed the time I've gotten to spend with this wonderful group of kids. I'm going to be a bit sad when it's over and when we lose three to graduation. I hope all of my 10th and 11th graders come back next year, and I'm going to try to encourage them to do so. I'm going to talk to them this week about planning for next year and trying to figure out which students we want to take to camp next year. It'll only be available to those 10th and 11th graders that have stuck it out this year and are interested in going. I"ll make sure they know the school will be paying for it and they will owe nothing and I will be going with them. Maybe that will help...we shall see.

In other news, I am giving a test today to my regular Geometry classes over our trigonometry unit. I'm a bit stressed out after grading the test from my Honors class from last week and hoping that maybe it was a fluke and my regular classes do better than Honors did. Students don't realize that teachers get stressed and upset about test days often just like our students do. I've been anxious all day for them and I'm not even the one taking the test. I'm likely going to take the tests home to grade tomorrow or stay late after school to grade tomorrow. I'm not touching them today or tonight. That gives me time to breathe before looking over them. I really hope the kids did well.
