A week ago, the MHO (Meisnewbie Health Organization) issued a series of bulletins about minimizing the risk of coronavirus infection through proper handwashing, use of hand sanitizer, etc. I allowed as how it might be a good idea to take precautions, since we have at least one confirmed case in the city. newbie ended up buying me a huge box of paper towels (for drying hands and turning off faucets; you’re not supposed to touch the faucet handle with your clean hands) and hand sanitizer. He said that hand sanitizer was sold out basically everywhere in the Bay Area, where he lives.
(Side note: HGR hates the term “the Bay Area.” It’s so egocentric. Like, you think that’s the only bay in the world? Or is everyone supposed to automatically know which bay you’re talking about??)
Anyway, the next day, I went to Walgreens and found a huge shelf full of hand sanitizer on sale. Our city is not so paranoid about this stuff. I took a photo to send to newbie.
If there is a legitimate pandemic, I’m likely screwed, since I take the train to work daily. It’s a 45-minute commute both ways. (One dude on Twitter recommended staying 1.5 meters from other people at all times. Ahahaha no. You aren’t even allowed to put your backpack on the seat to prevent someone sitting next to you.) Technically, I could work from home—like 90% of my job is doable from home, and I could just come in once a week to get edits and stuff—but nobody at work has mentioned this, and I’m not going to be the first to bring it up.
On my way to work this morning, the woman sitting behind me was chatting on her cell phone about how her employer is having everyone work from home starting tomorrow. Well, good. Less people on the train going forward.
Then I got to work, and there were flyers pasted near the elevators stating that the risk to people in the state is LOW. The flyers also contained hot protips like “wash your hands” and “don’t come to work if sick.” Thanks, but you’re way behind the MHO on this one.

[Unrelated note re: picture: I like how JustMegawatt posts a selfie with his entries. I'm not into selfies, but I figure my daily buddy photos can be my version of that]
That Coronavirus spreads fast! My state, Virginia, doesn't have a case yet, but since I heard that New York had several cases already, I wouldn't doubt it spreading south soon. I'm on the other side of the country and when I hear "bay area" I'm automatically thinking San Francisco, even though there are many bays, that one is widely known as "the" bay area.
Yeah, I know that's the common usage of "bay area." HGR does too, he just kinda thinks it's disrespectful to other bays haha
