quof is off to Japan, or an oil rig, I’m not clear which. Chill Guy from GGG is subbing for him. It always impresses me when someone subs in raid and picks up all our homebrew strats on the fly from quick verbal explanations. Some things are basically the same (e.g., classical concepts—just gotta remember how we order our Playstation symbols), but some aren’t (e.g., caloric theory). HGR posted a diagram of the GGG caloric strat and it was, like, too perfect for me to comprehend. He says he prefers it because it’s more mathematically efficient, but it’s not actually easier/better in execution.
On Saturday it took us nearly two hours to clear Athena 1. numbers was just about ready to call the session when we got a clear. Good thing, because it got us the Dante Shirk Incident of 2023: for the tankbuster after pangenesis, he panicked and hit all the buttons, including shirk, and all seven of us on the right side of the screen got busted. It was a magical moment.
On Sunday we briefly saw the fabled CALORIC THEORY 2 :0000 (not a surprise, we got spoiled on its existence because a few weeks ago numbers saw a party finder recommending that people review the strat) So far, it looks like a straightforward game of hot potato. A randomly selected player starts with the potato (which periodically does an AoE spread). So you pass the potato to the next person, then run out of the spread. Easy mechanic for babies. Also, if you move too much, you explode and wipe the raid. Also, everyone starts with 2 caloric stacks, except one person starts with 3, so they need to be the last person to receive the potato (they don’t have sufficient movement to give it to anyone else).
KJH worked out a strat where we initially stand in a 2 x 4 grid and just pass it to an appropriate person every time (don’t pass it to someone who already had it, don’t cut off the potato’s path since it has to reach everyone, make sure the 3-stack person can and does receive it last). numbers is concerned the mental load for that might be too high. Well, we’ll see how it goes. We only got there once and, for obvious reasons, did not get very far into the mechanic.
Parse zone: Last week I got a 30% parse on Athena 1. Green parse!! This week I got a 22% and a 16% (second and third best parse respectively). I went to xivanalysis but couldn’t figure out what was so much better about the 30% run. Maybe I just crit more?
