I soft quit Wolvden over winter break. It’s a “soft” quit because I haven’t necessarily quit forever; I might return for lunar events…or I might not. Who can say?
It comes down to this: After nearly three years of daily rolling, I was tired of Wolvden being the bookend and punctuation to every activity. It’s my first thing when I wake up (gotta send out hunters and scouts and spend down my lead’s energy) and my last thing before going to sleep (if I stay up until RO, I can get in my first round of hunts, put all my pups in lessons for the day, and spend down my lead’s energy). If I’m absorbed in a game or a book or hanging out with friends, I have to remember to keep checking back. And I just don’t feel like doing it any more.
I still like Wolvden a lot. But, as HGR says, I’ve gotten the full Wolvden experience. And lately I spend so much energy on maintaining my pack that I don’t have time for the enjoyable aspects of the game (lore, art, design). Few of my current pack members have individual personalities. Most are just seventh-generation chaser of X squad, Snickerdoodle/Kazivar/Tachyon ancestry, pairbonded for lineage purposes to another chaser who also has no lore.
Thanksgiving was my first hiatus. Christmas was my second. When I returned home from Christmas break, I discovered that rolling over seemed like way too much effort. I got on for one day to wind up my affairs (sending someone a just-weaned pup I had promised him, taking Sephiroth off public stud). On that day, I had mixed feelings about leaving: the Center of the Universe squad is level 19, and it’s a shame if they never reach max level and climb the leaderboards. Karta-Kul is also just beginning his climb. And I have some pregnant wolves—isn’t it kind of sad never to see their pups?
But, on the other hand, I’ve seen it all before. No new content here. More importantly, I’ve hardly thought about my wolves in the past two weeks. I don’t miss them.
In Flight Rising, people on the forums often ask for advice on how to do a lair purge. A common piece of advice is that if you’re feeling iffy about dragons, stick them in your hibden and don’t look at them for a few weeks. If you don’t miss them, maybe it’s time for them to go.
Well, I did it. I put my whole pack in the hibden and I feel great.
Maybe I won’t roll for lunar after all.

edit (1/15): Sometimes the advice is “See how many you can name from memory.” Surely that won’t be a problem…will it?
Not the worst. I got all but one of the hunters (although not being able to remember the lead chaser for Voidcast Savior is driving me up the wall), and probably got all the misc roles (surely I don’t have more than six pupsitters, that would be kind of ridiculous).
I still don’t miss any of them. Except Razor. That lad is poised to be the premier chaser stud of his day, if he ever gets his day, which he won’t at this rate. Oh well! Ratatoskr, Kazivar, Tortellini, and Oreo Flurry all send their regards.
