Thoughts On The Election Results

11:25 PM

As someone unable to vote in federal elections, I'm neutral to both Democrats and Republicans. I am a United States citizen, but since I don't live in the States, I am unable to vote in any federal or state elections. I can vote in the Puerto Rico elections, which occurred yesterday, and I didn't vote because I'm ignorant of the candidates and their positions. I just found out the election results today for PR, and the person who won, won by a landslide apparently.

The main politics in Puerto Rico is mainly about joining the United States as the 51st state. That's pretty much what the candidates for the governor position's main running points are, some are for statehood, others against it. I think Statehood has won the vote for the past 20 years or so though in PR, but ultimately congress has the power in this, and PR has been declined at every attempt. The person who won this year's election, supports statehood. I think the second place person, was all about independence and separation entirely from the United States.

But like I said, voting for Statehood has passed in the past 20 years or so, so I think every governor for a while has been pro-statehood, though I'm not certain about that since I barely know about the politics and the governors here. I've never been to Hawaii, and that would be a good place to compare Puerto Rico to, so I don't know what comes along with being a State, what the differences are, what the implications are. A friend of mine from New York who's lived in PR for around 14 years, and is also vegan, says PR is not ready to become a state, because there's a lot PR gets away with by not being one. I don't know though, like I said I haven't been to Hawaii, but I doubt it's so different than here.

My friend listed examples about what PR would have to adhere to such as federal road laws, which would ban parking on both sides of the street, parking on sidewalks, and so on. You do see that in PR. People always say the driving in their area is bad, it doesn't matter where you come from, people always think other drivers are bad. Well I've seen people make a U-Turn from the rightmost lane, cutting off 3 lanes of traffic. I've seen red lights run through dozens of times. I've seen my first accident in real life on the highways here, back in 2021, saw it happen right in front of me.

The worst instance of the driving though, is the turns. There are a few roads with 3 lanes turning left. You would expect people to just stick to their lane, if they are on the leftmost lane and they make a left turn, they should enter the leftmost lane. The middle lane people making a left should go to the middle, and the rightmost lane people should go to the rightmost lane when turning. People do not stick to their lanes. I get nearly pushed out of the lane every single time. Every single time. This happens all the time, happens so often that it even happened tonight, around an hour ago. I nearly hit another car.

I was in the middle lane, and there's 3 lanes of cars making a left. All 3 lanes have lots of cars lined up in them, I was the second person in the middle lane with one car in front of me. So the leftmost car should go to the left lane, I was in the middle lane so I would go to the middle following the person in front, and the rightmost person should go to the right lane. I can't believe the person in my lane, in front of me, entered the rightmost lane as we made the turn. I was just instinctively following them, so I also nearly entered the rightmost lane, and almost hit the person making a left there too. This happens literally all the time too, though more often it's the person on the leftmost lane entering my center lane and pushing me to the right. I always go to the middle lane since that's where I need to be.

The roads can be really small in PR too. There are one lane roads where you have to share between two cars moving in opposite directions, so both cars basically have to go on the side to pass each other. I don't mind though. I think I became a much better driver driving in these conditions. There's so much space in the U.S. and the roads are immaculate. Here, not so much. Still, I like living in PR much more than Virginia.

Anyway, I'd write more, but I am so sleepy. I didn't even write my thoughts on the election or what happened today. I'm just so sleepy right now. I'm just gonna go to sleep and try to continue my train of thought tomorrow.
