Apparently, it’s a saying that the first pancake is always lumpy. It’s a motivational saying indicating that your first effort may not be great, but it paves the way for better efforts to come.
I’ve never heard this as a saying. However, it is empirically true. The first pancake is always lumpy. However, that doesn’t mean the first pancake is worse. In fact, arguably, the first pancake is the best—despite having bad optics—because it soaks up the lion’s share of melted butter from the pan. (I don’t re-butter the pan after the first set of pancakes.) In that sense, the first pancake is best celebrated as a pioneer, an innovator, an early bird who gets the worm.
This is the kind of stuff I think about when making pancakes. Last night I was up late chatting about pancakes and waffles with HGR and newbie, and now I gotta have some. It started with the classic “pancakes or waffles?” discussion, and then somehow we got on the subject of per capita pancake and waffle consumption. I took to google and discovered there are a lot of extremely bullish projections of the pancake/waffle market and all the graphs are wack. None of these people have heard of putting axes on graphs. newbie was flipping his lid.
I didn’t have any chocolate chips, but the pancakes turned out great, especially the first one. I should make pancakes more often. I can help bring up the statistics.
