Thinking about my last encounter with a cop. This was at the train station, pre-pandemic. I arrived at the station a bit early and decided to do a Pokemon Go raid. To reach the gym, you have to stand in a side passage near a service door, so I did that. Also, I was walking in place to farm Fitbit steps.
In retrospect, it must’ve looked pretty odd. The cop stationed in the lobby came over to talk to me. But it never occurred to me that he might find my behavior suspicious. I just thought, “He’s bored from standing there all day and wants someone to talk to.” We had a nice chat. I explained that I was walking for exercise. He told me that he used to do something similar: when watching TV, he’d get up during the ads to do push-ups. He hadn’t done it in a while, but he thought it might be good to get back into the habit. Anyway, my train was coming, so I took my leave.
It was a super chill encounter. I think my innocent mental state (as noted, it did not cross my mind that he might suspect me of anything) reflected itself in my demeanor, which in turn made it a chill encounter. If I had reacted defensively, it might’ve been a whole different story.
