Around a week ago, I had a Costco tonkotsu ramen bowl for dinner. Instead of using the packet of chili oil that comes with it, I added Korean chili sauce. I left the packet of chili oil on the counter, thinking I might try it on potatoes at some point.
Today, roommate got up for a ramen break. In the middle of preparing his ramen, he started gesticulating urgently at me. Apparently, instead of adding the seasoning pack, he accidentally added the chili oil, and he wanted to know WHAT WAS THIS he just poured all over his ramen. I explained and it was fine.
Actually it was more than fine, because he liked it! He said it was better than the usual seasoning pack. But now he wants to know where to get more, and I don’t know of a source for it besides inside the tonkotsu bowls.
update (5/12): Today he decided to try my Korean chili sauce on his ramen…but he accidentally used the sriracha instead. Selecting condiments is tough. But it’s fine, that’s a totally fine thing to put on ramen, and he enjoyed it.
update (6/5): Over Memorial Day weekend, I was at the Korean mart and saw chili oil for sale. Score! I texted a pic to roommate and he said to go for it, so I bought it.
Then roommate tried it out and it didn’t go so well.
(1) He was surprised it was so caloric (yeah, it’s chili oil).
(2) It has peanuts. He wound up with a peanut on his ramen. oh no!!
Soooo it looks like he’s done with chili oil and the rest of the bottle is mine. Well, that’s how it goes sometimes.
