This morning I arrived at the office and logged into my work computer. Instead of displaying my desktop, it displayed a black screen with the word “Hi.”
I was taken aback for a sec. Uh, hi? Then the message changed to something like “We’re preparing your settings” and I remembered that last week, when I left the office, I directed my computer to install Windows updates and shut down. So it was just finishing the installation.
For some reason, once the installation finished, it decided I didn’t have a valid Windows key. Weird. I’ve now got this permanent thing on my screen prompting me to activate Windows. Restarting did not fix the issue. I really should contact tech support, but it doesn’t affect functionality so it’s whatever for now.
Microsoft Windows is actually free. Anyone can download and install it directly from the website, you don't need to purchase it. There is some button somewhere like "I don't have a product activation key" and it will let you install and use all the features anyway, at least this has always been the case, it could be different now. The only thing is that there's always a watermark text that says "This product is not registered", and that's it.
@JustMegawatt Oh I see, interesting. Glad it won't kick me out or anything.
