colors, shapes, and a gravel driveway

So here we are, up at brother's place for pre-Thanksgiving. I’m pleased to announce the little tabletop Christmas tree is back. That guy has been on display like three-quarters of the year. I respect it. BB's new favorite thing is to turn on the dance music on his Bluey microphone and simultaneously turn on “O Christmas Tree” for max musical chaos.

The “in” things this weekend were colors/shapes/letters/numbers. They’re everywhere! So cool! On Saturday we went to a Tibetan restaurant for lunch. After BB finished eating, we walked around the restaurant and looked at all the shapes of the floor tiles (triangles, rectangles, squares). We played a game where I would put each foot on a triangle tile, and he would do the same; then maybe I’d put my feet on squares, and he’d do the same; and so on. Also the tables were numbered, and we would count them backwards from 6 and then BB would say “blast off!!”

Saturday was a bit of a drag because we went to see brother’s new house, which is rapidly nearing completion (estimated completion date: December 12). I looked around for like five minutes and was like, nice house. However, brother & wife needed to minutely inspect everything and document every flaw for the builders to fix. So we were there for 2+ hours. I didn’t even bring my sketchbook. Fortunately I was with BB, who is too young to be bored. We went up the stairs. We went down the stairs. We looked out the window to see piles of dirt, an excavator, and pine trees (we counted the pine trees). We went upstairs again to look out the window and count the pine trees again. We excitedly pointed at every ceiling fan. We opened cabinets and closed cabinets and looked at the Homeowners Information packet (BB pointed out the H and the I). Finally, sometime past 3 pm, we got to leave and go to lunch at the Tibetan restaurant I mentioned earlier.

We’ll be coming up again to visit them for Christmas, although it’s a tossup whether they’ll be in the old house or the new house by then. I suspect the December 12 date will be extended once they put in all their requests for stuff to fix. (Brother spent hours that evening cataloging/sorting/labeling all the photos he took of things he wanted touched up.) And like…who wants to move that close to the Christmas holiday and then have to unpack and get things presentable for family? So I have a feeling it’ll be one more Christmas in the old house.

Dad was being annoying about the driveway situation. The driveway for the new house is currently unfinished (just loose gravel). Brother & wife opted not to get the driveway done through the house builders, since they would’ve charged an extra 15% fee. Reasonable. Problem is, they can’t hire an outside contractor to work on the driveway until the house builders are off the job site. By then, it’ll be so late in the season they won’t be able to get the driveway done until spring. That means they’ll have to shovel a gravel driveway all winter long. Pain in the ass.

Dad keeps criticizing the decision, harping on how it’s going to be So Hard to shovel a gravel driveway. For sure, it ain’t great, but I don’t see any point harping on it. The decision has been made, the ship has sailed, it’s already the end of November. And an extra 15% charge is probably a lot.
