Appreciating of Everything, Got Rank 6 in DoomFields

12:50 AM

I was shopping around the Humble Bundle website, and saw this health bar game asset, an orb health bar with a fancy drawing like the one from Diablo 3. I've never played Diablo 3, but have seen some screenshots and gameplay, and this health bar is inspired by it. Anyway, websites sell game assets like health bar drawings and animations so that developers can purchase them and use them in their games. There are entire marketplaces for game dev assets, and lots of things like backgrounds, sounds, music, character drawings, UI elements, etc. are sold at these places.

So this health bar was really fancy. I'm not able to find it now, but it was really fancy looking, and selling for around $30. Looking at it made me think about how complicated it was, it had this orb being held up by fancy Gothic statues of gargoyles and stone angels. Reminds me of something that would come from Greco/Roman or Gothic inspired statues, something like the Trevi Fountain. The orb itself had a liquid, and the demo video showed that you could customize the colors and the animation that would play for the orb, and it was very fancy. Again, I can't find it anymore.

But yeah, it took so much work and effort to create this game asset. You can imagine it took a lifetime of education and knowledge to be able to create such a piece. I wouldn't be able to at all, with all my knowledge and skill. This definitely humbled me, because there was no way I could create this, even trying my utmost. I can barely draw any stick figures, let alone this fancy statue thing. Plus he customized the orb so it was animated, and customizable. I wouldn't know how to do that or how to use his game asset even if I had it.

There is so much that goes into a game, that even something as simple as a health bar, had a ton of effort put into it, especially if it has some fancy design. When I was in college, I can't believe that one of my classes had this debate on whether or not video games were art, and we had to write an essay on it. I better have said that video games are art. Video games literally contain artwork, so they already have artwork in it. Video games are like a new dimension of movies. Drawings and sound recordings are one dimensional, movies are two dimensional combining drawings and sound, and then video games are 3 dimensional because they encompass movies plus experience. Maybe 4D can be real life, which encompasses video games.

Anyway, I got rank 6 in DoomFields PvP the other day. Out of the many I don't even know how many players, I got rank 6 in the PVP leaderboards. You can verify it in the game right now. PVP consists of starting from scratch, it is a roguelike after all, and then building up your team to be the best. I've played 20+ pvp games since reaching rank 6, and despite knowing more of the game and gaining more experience, I have never been able to beat my rank 6 score. I've not even gotten close. The closest I've gotten to since is probably 19-20 wins, but my rank 6 score is 26 wins.

Historically, in any games with rankings that I have played, if I wanted to do well and it was possible for anyone to reach it in a single playthrough, I would do well. I've gotten rank 1 in the world in a few games a bunch of times. I don't think I can get rank 1 here, but rank 6 is enough.
