the forest of boxes

The day of the big move was blustery and bleak, but thankfully not rainy. We set out at 8 am to make the final drive up to Razorback Ridge. Another thing I won’t miss: Driving back and forth all the time. Road trips are romantic when they’re rare, but when they become frequent they’re just obnoxious.

Mom and Dad dropped me off at the condo with a pile of luggage, then drove onward to the apartment. The plan was for them to rendezvous with the movers at 11 am and oversee the packing, while we would take care of stuff over at the condo. There wasn’t much to take care of. I paced back and forth and unpacked a few boxes. My roommate lay on the floor and bemoaned the lack of a bed.

The move itself went smoothly (…mostly). The movers managed to fit everything into a single truckload. The living room filled up with boxes as we ate a McDonald’s lunch standing in the kitchen. By around 2:30, our box collection was complete. We did it! We moved in!

Only one item didn’t survive the move, though we didn’t realize it until the movers were gone: my roommate’s computer desk. Some of the support brackets on the back panel busted loose, and without them, the desk sways back and forth with a light touch. It definitely can’t hold a computer. Mom and Dad tried fixing it and only succeeded in popping loose more of the brackets. My roommate was mad. “I’m sick of your parents breaking my shit,” he told me. He’s anxious to get going on Endwalker, which our friends have already completed. Even meisnewbie has nearly finished Endwalker. That’s how far behind we are.

Mom and Dad helped unpack some boxes, then left for Hampton Inn, where they’ll be spending the night. Once they left, we celebrated the move by ordering pizza (Ed & Joe’s junkyard pizza with crispy chicken, pepperoni, and jalapenos). First proper meal in the new home!
