Unrelatedly, the boss wants us to start coming back to the office. We're adopting a hybrid schedule where we each come in one day a week. I picked Wednesday as my office day. Returning to a world where sleep is not a free action, at least for one day a week. My sleep schedule is already out of whack from staying up until 3 am the past couple nights working overtime on our fast-track client project. It’s fine. I’ll nap extra on Thursday.
Upon reaching work, I discovered that my keycard and computer account were both defunct due to inactivity, and also I left my office key at home (it’s on my old apartment keychain). It was all cool though; the security guys let me in and I got my stuff reactivated quickly. Then it was just a chill day. I made considerable progress on my project. My pen ran out of ink from taking so many notes, so I popped over to Walgreens to buy a couple more. I also got a pork-and-noodle bowl for lunch. It was good having time to casually enjoy downtown, instead of rushing from train to medical appointment to train with a grumpy roommate in tow.
Notably, the office was practically empty. I saw one other office with the light on, but I didn’t see anyone at the desk and didn’t meet another person in the pod all day. But I did enjoy my day downtown. (And I really was much more productive, although I attribute that to the change of pace rather than anything inherent about the office, seeing as I’ve had plenty of wildly unproductive days in offices.)
