art supply inventory

Decided to take stock of my art supplies. Conclusion: I have a lot of art supplies.

  • Pens: Pilot G2 for dry sketches, Micron 05 and 10 for mixed media sketches. Plus a bunch of colored Pilot G2s I haven’t used in years. I should rebrand them as “watercolor pens.”
  • Watercolors: Modified Winsor & Newton Cotman starter kit.
  • OUT: Viridian, burnt sienna, black, white.
  • IN: Hooker green dark, burnt umber, dio purple (WN Cotman), payne’s gray, phthalo turquoise (WN Professional), bleedproof white (Dr. Ph. Martin).
  • Thinking of rolling over most of my kit to Professionals, but it’ll be a sec because I need to use up my existing tubes. The yellows + dio purple can stay, those are strong.
  • Watercolors (2): Gansai Tambi set. Gift from Mom. Haven’t used these much. The stickiness and lack of mixing tray throws me off. (But I mix in my Cotman pans all day every day. I guess the Gansai Tambis feel too nice for that? Liz’s suggestion is to “sacrifice” half of the pan for mixing while keeping the other half clean.)
  • Markers: Crayola dual-ended doodle markers. Gift from brother.
  • Crayons: Crayola 64-set.
  • Colored pencils: Crayola 50-set. Rarely use these. Right now I’m enjoying crayons way more.
  • Watercolor crayons: Six Neocolor IIs (because you get a discount when you buy at least six). Jade, lime, sanddollar, salmon, plum, navy. First four are brights/pastels to fill gaps in my watercolor roster. The other two are darks that felt good with the overall palette.
  • Watercolor pencils: Staedtler Luna 12-set. I found these in a drawer while searching for my Adobe Photoshop CD. Quite possible they’ve been in that drawer since 2007. I didn’t know what “watercolor pencils” were back then; I vaguely thought they were high-quality/watercolor-esque.

Trip Prep 2026: Black pilot g2, microns, markers, Crayola crayons. That’s it. Want mixed media layering, but no splashy media around the three-year-old. Looking forward to teaching him about urban sketching.
