train rides and nacho fest 2022

I had a dentist checkup, so here’s another small milestone: a successful train trip downtown. At the platform was a sign: on weekends, downtown trains board from platform 1. On weekdays after 2 pm, they board from platform 2. But what about weekdays before 2 pm? There was no indication, and no audio announcements either. I decided to hedge my bets by standing at the easternmost side of the platform, where it intersects the road, so I’d be able to swap sides if need be.

The train came on platform 1. Good intel.

Downtown, I had a chance to look around the train station. It’s a tiny place: small seating area, ticket counter, hot dog stand, restrooms. That’s it. After leaving, I used Pokemon Go to navigate, heading towards two gyms I recognized until I was back in familiar territory. Then it was a 20-minute walk to the dentist’s office. It was a bright day, but cold, and my mask fogged up my glasses every few seconds. A major tripping hazard. I could have taken off my mask, but the sound of someone coughing violently near me at a traffic light was good incentive not to.

Dentist visit was fine (surprisingly). I left at around 4 and set about finding food. It was more challenging than one would expect, since several of my usual places have reduced their hours. In the end I went to Qdoba (takeout only, but that’s fine) and got three cheese nachos. Then it was time to head for home. I took the 5:00 train back.

I wasn’t enthused about walking back home in the dark, walking along the shoulder of the road with my back facing traffic and thick glazed ice to my side. If I ever need to go back to the office regularly and walk this path after dark, I might want to invest in a high-visibility jacket, weird as it sounds. But all went well today. I reached home with 17K steps and feasted on nachos.
